| | | The picture below shows a larger view of the (2) Different Old Maine Town Country Name Tourist Attraction Sign Photograph Slides in this lot. The top slide pictured is dated August 1965. The bottom slide is not dated but it is believed to be from the 1950s. It looks like the sign was reenforced with a second post back then. The woman pictured was from Sweden and that is why she is pointing to that particular sign. Maine has an unusual number of towns with different country or foreign city names. Someone over 50 years ago had the novel idea to create a sign with mileage numbers to the towns. It became a hit and the sign is visited by many tourists for a photo opportunity, even today. It is located at the intersection of routes 5 and 35 in Lynchville, Maine. The signs have arrows and are marked as follows: NORWAY 14 mi. PARIS 15 mi. DENMARK 23 mi. NAPLES 23 mi. SWEDEN 25 mi. POLAND 37 mi. MEXICO 37 mi. PERU 46 mi. CHINA 94 mi. The color photo slides each measure 2'' x 2''. The photographs appear to be in mint condition as pictured. |
