The picture shows three views of this Old Checkers Pop Corn Confection & Angelus Marshmallows Advertising Premium Bottle Opener & Corkscrew. Shown it a top view, a bottom view, and a side view with the corkscrew section pulled out. The opener is not dated but it is believed to be from the 1930s. The Cracker Jack Company owned and manufactured Angelus Marshmallows and it acquired Checkers Popcorn Confection from the Shotwell Manufacturing Company in 1926 when the similar product became too much competion for Cracker Jack. This was most likely a premium that was given out to grocers, distributors, salesmen, etc.. It was not used as a toy prize in one of the confection boxes. The opener is made of steel and it has recessed lettering. It is marked on the top and side as follows: CHECKERS HEALTHFUL POPCORN CONFECTION ANGELUS MARSHMALLOWS PAT. APL. FOR J. E. MERGOTT CO. NEWARK, N.J. The corkscrew opener measures 3-3/4'' long. It is in excellent condition with only minor wear as pictured. |
