The tin box has a hinged cover or lid. It is not dated but it is believed to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. The top has an image of a well dressed woman in a gown with a horse and a dog, surrounded by geometric designs. The back or bottom has an image of a shabby older man and a barefoot boy. It is imprinted in gold and black. It is marked as follows: CHARM OF THE WEST SPAULDING & MERRICK CHICAGO ARE YOU CHEWING TOBACCO SIR? I SAID NEVER! I TAKE THAT BACK, MEANT HARDLY EVER AT THE BEST. BUT SOMETIMES I DO TAKE A CHEW OF SPAULDING & MERRICKS “CHARM OF THE WEST”. NOTICE: THE MANUFACTURERS OF THIS TOBACCO HAVE COMPLIED WITH ALL THE REQUIREMENTS OF LAW.
