The picture shows a view of this Old Grocery Store & Post Office Exterior Glass Photograph Negative. Also shown are two closer views of areas on the negative. The location and year this was made are unknown, however, it is believed to be from New Hampshire or Massachusetts in the 1800s. The building has a grocery store, a U.S. Post Office, and it appears to have a home or apartments in the upper floors. The image has (6) men, a dog, and a horse pictured. The one on the wagon is an early letter carrier. He is in a suit and hat with a badge on the hat. Next to him is a mail bag with mail. The wagon is marked on the side ''U.S. MAIL''. One man on the porch appears to be the Postmaster. Another may be the Grocer. The three young men together with the dog may be employees or customers. Some of the store interior can be seen. There are signs in the window, below the window, and hanging above. Most of the signs on the building can be read. They are as follows: POST OFFICE BLOCK POST OFFICE THOS. S. SINCLAIR GROCERIES DRINK COCA COLA 5c PALATINE (???) (???) HOME (???) COMPANY (???) AGENCY NEW ENGLAND LIFE INSURANCE OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS (?????) (?????) (?????) There are also two old bicycle racks, one with a bicycle. There are leaded glass windows over the entry, an awning, and two American flags. A few more buildings can be seen behind the Post Office. The glass negative measures 7'' x 5''. It is in excellent condition with some scratches as pictured. |
