The medal coin is a gold color that is probably brass, and it is enameled. One side has an image of the United States Navy emblem with a sailing ship under full sail with flag and pennants, a ship’s anchor, and a bald eagle with spread wings. The other side has a nuclear submarine. Both sides have a rope border. It is marked on the two sides as follows: DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
