| | | The picture shows a front and back view of this Early 19th Century Mexican Colonial (8) Reale Coin. It is dated 1802 OM. This is the silver coin where the phrase "PIECES OF EIGHT" came from. Many of these coins were cut into sections to be used as 1, 2, and 4 Reale pieces. Two bits being equal to the American Quarter. Another interesting fact I have been told is that the ribbon and column design on the back is where the American dollar sign ($) came from. This coin appears to have been used as a medallion with a hole at the top. If only this coin could talk.... This coin was partially researched by the collector in the 1980's. I will be going by what is written on the coin holder. Also, because I am not a professional grader, and since conditions are subjective, I will not attempt to grade this coin. You will need to judge the condition by the clear obverse and reverse images of the coin. The coin measures 1-9/16" wide. |
