The other side has Burgoyne presenting his sword to Gates who stands bareheaded on the right, he holds in his left hand his tri-cornered hat. In the background is the British Army lays down their arms to the American Army who stands at attention on the right behind Gates. The original medal was made in 1787, and this replica medal was made by the United States Mint, in our Bicentennial year of 1976. It appears to be made of pewter. It is marked on the two sides as follows: HORATIO GATES DUCI STRENUO COMITIA AMERICANA N. GATTEAUA SALUS REGIONUM SEPTENTRIONAL HOSIE AD SARATOGAM IN DEDITION ACCEPTO DIE XVII OCT.
