The picture shows a view of both sides of this Old M.S. Gripsholm Swedish American Cruise Ship Line Pocket Knife With Case. There were two ships named Gripsholm and this knife is believed to be from the first one.

The knife has four blades and comes with the pouch case pictured. It was found in this case. On one side there are three crowns, a Swedish flag, an American flag, two intertwined dragons and it is marked:

''GRIPSHOLM'' CRUISE
SWEDISH AMERICAN LINE

The other side has another two dragons as well as a crest with lions, crown, and a shield. The blades are marked as follows:

(star)
EMIL OLSSON
ESKILSTUNA
SWEDEN
5

To judge the size the closed pocketknife measures 3-1/2'' long. It is in good condition with wear from use and a chipped larger blade as pictured.

Below here is some background reference information found online from two different sources for this ship:

MS Gripsholm

''Two Swedish ocean liners were named MS Gripsholm. The first MS Gripsholm was the first motor ocean liner built for the trans-Atlantic trade. She was built in 1925 at Newcastle for the Swedish American Line (SAL), and on 1 February 1927 made a first cruise, from Gsteborg to the Mediterranean.''

''From 1942 to 1946, the United States Department of State chartered Gripsholm as an exchange and repatriation ship, carrying Japanese and German nationals to exchange points where she then picked up Americans to bring home. In this service she sailed under the auspices of the International Red Cross, with a Swedish captain and crew. The ship made 12 round trips, carrying a total of 27,712 reptriates. Exchanges took place at neutral ports; at Lourenco Marques in Mozambique or Mormugoa in Portuguese India with the Japaneses, and Stockholm or Lisbon with the Germans.''

''After the war, Gripsholm was used to deport inmates of US prisons to Italy and Greece. The Swedish American Line sold Gripsholm to Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1954, who renamed her to Berlin. The ship was sold for scrap in 1966.''

About the SWEDISH AMERICAN LINE

''The Swedish American Line was founded in November 1914 by the Swedish ship owner Dan Broström. After 60 successful years, the company's passenger ship operations were dissolved in 1975, suffering severely from a weakened cruise market.''

''SAL:s Atlantic route played an important part in the 20th century emigration from Scandinavia to North America, as well as for business and recreational travel. The company and its ships were the pride of the nation and the youngest of the liners was always regarded as the flagship of the Swedish merchant marine.''

''The ports of call were Göteborg (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark) and/or Oslo (Norway), Halifax (Canada), and New York, N.Y. Anticipating a decline in the North Atlantic passenger traffic sales, SAL decided to enter the cruise market in 1927. As cruise liners, the ships were renowned for their beauty, luxury comfort, and the highest quality service provided by the Swedish crew. The name Rockefeller appeared on the passenger list more than once.''

''The first ship in the SAL fleet was the steamship Stockholm. The ships in the years to follow were'':

S/S Stockholm 1915 - 1928
S/S Drottningholm 1920 - 1948
S/S Kungsholm 1923 - 1924 (leased)
MS Gripsholm 1925 - 1954
MS Kungsholm 1928 - 1947
MS Stockholm 1937 - 1941
MS Stockholm 1948 - 1960
MS Kungsholm 1953 - 1965
MS Gripsholm 1957 - 1975
MS Kungsholm 1966 - 1975

''During World War II the Drottningholm and the Gripsholm were used as repatriation ships and made 33 voyages to exchange approximately 30,000 prisoners of war, diplomats, women and children, between the warfaring nations.''
