| | | The picture below shows larger front and back views of the (2) Old Hakata Japan Non Commissioned Officers NCO Open Mess Advertising Good For Token Coins in this lot. The exact year that these tokens were made or used is unknown but it woulkd be between 1959 and 1967. One is good for 5 cents and the other 10 cents in trade. They are marked on the two sides as follows: HAKATA NCO OPEN MESS 5c IN TRADE and 10c IN TRADE The five cent token coin measures about 7/8'' wide and the ten cent coin measures about 1'' wide. They appear to be in good condition with some wear from use as pictured. Below here, for reference, is some additional information about the Hakata U.S. Military Base in Japan: Naval Security Activity Detachment Hakata was activated in May 1959. Because of the size of the command and scope of the mission increased the detachment was changed to on July 1, 1967 to a Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Hakata. NSGA Hakata was co-located with the U.S. Army’s 14th Army Security Agency Field Station, Hakata, Japan. After 13 years in operations, in April, 1972 NSGA Hakata closed and most of the personnel, assets, mission and functions were transferred to NSG Det Pyong Taek South Korea, which had recently opened on March 1, 1972. |
