The sides have a wood grain design like the lid and the edges are burnt stripes. It has a real Art Nouveau look to it. The design appears to be burnt and pressed into the wood. This is a great old gift box. The corners are nailed and the lid is hinged. The inscription written on the bottom reads: ALMA
