The pictures show a front and back view of the (5) Old Massachusetts & New Hampshire Metal Credit Charge Plates with Leather Cases in this lot. Four of the five charge plates included here have cases. Prior to the common use of credit cards as we know them today, there were these charge plates that stores used to authorize and credit a persons account for goods purchased. These are believed to be from the 1930s or 1940s. The metal plates are embossed with raised lettering and notches on the edge. Three of these were from a Husband and Wife from the same Peabody, Massachusetts address. The other two were from different women, one from Lowell, Massachusetts and the other from Manchester, New Hampshire. The plates have a paper insert inside them. All of them are signed. Two of these have an embossed leather case and the other two have embossed vinyl cases. The stores that these were from are as follows: (2) ALMY'S of Salem, Beverly, and Danvers, Massachusetts T.W. ROGERS CO. of Lynn, Massachusetts The LEAVITT STORES CORPORATION of Manchester, New Hampshire CHARGA-PLATE ASSOCIATES OF LOWELL of Lowell, Massachusetts All of these for one price! To judge the sizes the metal plates measure about 2-7/16'' x 1-3/16''. Four of these appear to be in excellent or better condition, and the other one without a case has wear as pictured and had gotten wet at some time. |
