| | | The picture shows a view of both sides of this 1959 Alaska 49th State Advertising Premium One Dollar Trade Token Coupon Coin. This coin was issued in 1959 when Alaska became the 49th State in the United States. It was good as currency for $1.00 at participating businesses and at the Chamber of Commerce in Fairbanks. Many would have been redeeemed and it is unknown how many survived by being saved as a souvenir. This is the first one like it that we have seen. It has a very detailed image of a port. There are ships, a train with a steam locomotive engine, a horse drawn cart, buildings, mountains, water, trees, and the shoreline. This large token is made of bright shiny brass, imitating Alaskan gold. It is marked on the two sides as follows: ALASKA 1959 - 1959 THE 49th STATE FAIRBANKS ''THE GOLDEN HEART'' OF ALASKA BIRTHDAY YEAR SOUVENIR MONEY GOOD FOR $1.00 IN TRADE ALL YEAR DURING '59 WHEN ALASKA BECAME '49 AT ANY COOPERATIVE BUSINESS OR REDEEMABLE AT FACE VALUE AT THE FAIRBANKS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UNTIL 12 NOON, THURSDAY DEC. 31, 1959 This large souvenir token coin measures 1-1/2'' wide. It is in mint condition as pictured. |
